Today’s pre-fabricated chimneys are a wood framed chase built around a stainless steel flue from the fireplace… capped off at the top with a sheet metal cap. chimney cap water

Most chase tops are poorly installed from the start. They’re made from thin galvanized sheet metal with no real support under the cover to shed water.

Over time the caps sag and start to rust due to water accumulation on the metal for extended periods.
